Italian success for whisky distillers PDF  | Print |  E-mail

A long fight by the Scotch whisky Association to protect consumers from imitation ‘Scotch
Whiskies’ in Ita ly has come to a successful end in the Italian Supreme Court.

In the late 1980s, a number of imitation ‘Scotch Whiskies’ were found on sale in major retailers in
Italy . All the ‘whiskies’ were supplied by a Mr Angelo Vendrame operating under several trading
names. Despite the use of Scottish sounding names such as ‘MacQueen’, ‘Clan 55’, ‘Jackson’s’,
‘Gold River’, ‘Royal Club’ and ‘Sull ivan’ none of the products was genuine. Some were
specifically mis-described as ‘Scotch Whisky’ on labels, whilst others claimed to be ‘produced’ or
‘matured’ in Scotland. Each label referred to a ‘ shell’ UK company, Alex Albright Ltd, which had
been set up by Mr Vendrame, to suggest a false provenance for his products.

A spokesman for The Scotch Whisky Association said:
“This has been a long battle to protect Italian consumers and Scotch Whisky di stillers from
imitation products unfairly trading on Scotch Whisky’s reputation. Such practices left unchecked
would undermine consumer confidence and the integrity of Scotch Whisky. Our top priority must
be to protect Scotch Whisky from all forms of unf air competition and we are delighted at the
successful outcome of this lengthy action in Italy.”

Scotch whisky companies have pledged to cut their use of fossil fuels by 80 per cent by 2050,
under the first industry- wide environmental strategy, published today (Wednesday 3 June).
The fossil fuel reduction amounts to an annual saving by 2050 of over 750,000 tonnes of carbon
dioxide - the equivalent of taking 235,000 cars off Scotland’s roads.

Cutting the reliance on fossil fuels is only one of a number of tough industry-wide targets, which
include: a significant reduction in the average weight of packaging used; the elimination of
sending waste from packaging operations to landfill sites; a commitment to source future whisky
casks only from sustainable oak forests; and to maintain the highest standards of water use and
discharge management.

Missed opportunity to support a key UK industry as whisky duty rises

There was widespread disappointment across the Scotch Whisky industry today following the
Chancellor’s decision to increase the duty on spirit drinks by 2%.
Distillers face challenging market conditions at home and abroad. Following duty rises of over
13.5% in 2008, The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) described the duty rise as ‘a blow to the
industry that comes at the worst possible time’. The Budget will add 14p to the price of a bottle of
Scotch Whis ky.
Gavin Hewitt, the SWA Chief Executive, said:
“A duty increase during a recession is a real blow and follows last year’s duty rises on Scotch, the
largest since the 1970s. The Government should be supporting all UK businesses, including
Scotch Whisky distillers, who have the potential to help drive the economy out of recession.
Instead, our industry is being weakened by the alcohol duty escalator.
“At a time when the Chancellor is looking for additional revenue, we believe that an increase in
excise duty will be counterproductive. As this represents a 5% increase in real terms, the
Treasury is likely to see lower receipts as the duty rise aggravates already tough market
conditions in the UK, the industry’s third largest market, and weak consumer confidence. The
duty rise also sets an unwelcome precedent for other governments around the world who are also
seeking to raise revenues. ”

Note to Editors:
1. With the Chancellor estimating that the Retail Price Index (RPI) will be -3% in September 2009,
today’s duty rise is an increase of 5% in real terms.
